Day 3 Tornado Worlds

An early start to the day with the first start scheduled for 8.30 am.  Left the beach at 7.30 and sailed down to the course area.

With nice pressure up to the top mark and a good north breeze it looked like we were going to get some good racing. Unfortunately the course was set about the length of the upwind leg to far down the lake and the wind started to return to the top of the lake. After a long wait we were towed back to the beach with what looked like a good breeze just up there.

After lunch we were sent out again and waited for the wind to fill from the south.

Both Sony and Windrush got great starts and worked the first leg well.

Windrush looked like they would get to the top mark in about 4 or 5th after working the middle right but a lift up the inside of the lay line bought the fleet up inside and Windrush rounded in about 20th with Sony ahead in 18 or so. Windrush worked their way forward and got back to about 13th before the last upwind when the boats that were well behind were able to set their kites and reach the top mark. Windrush ended the race in about 25th and Sony had the finish line pulled before they got there with several boats not making the time limit.

Bundy and Macca had good races again and were 1and 4. Macca has amazing speed and probably should have been winning some races. The boat is the spare boat from the BEL team but is in heaps better condition than the main boat.

Windrush have leased a boat and while the age is not too bad (99) it seems very soft by comparison with our boat back home. The rig tension is difficult to atain and the steering seems heavy and has 2 second tacking helm (ie: don’t let go!) unless the wind is up and we can stand aft. We have been gradually making it seem better with tuning changes and it is about as good as we can get it. It feels like we have about 50mm of helm all the time.

The Sony charter boat is older but in great condition. Jared and Billy are enjoying the Marstrom experience.

There was doubt today whether the wind was below 3 kts for the 15 minutes required for the race to be canned. There was little doubt from many competitors but the race will stand I am sure.
